Overview of the TP Link Archer C50 AC1200

The TP Link ARCHER C50 is a mid-level Wi-Fi router that gets the job done and then some more. If you need a powerful, reliable Wi-Fi connection without having to break the bank, then you can hardly do a better job than the ARCHER C50. This affordable but powerful Wi-Fi router is capable of speeds of up to a whopping 1167Mbps and can support more than 4 different devices connected to it at the same time.

Features such as support for the newer IPV6 technology and a parental guidance feature are not lacking either. With a nice black, minimal design, the ARCHER C50 is a worthy addition to any home needing a reliable internet connection.

Features and Specifications

It should be noted that this product is a mid-level product and as such will be lacking some powerful high end features. All said and done, it is still a pretty powerful and reliable device. Below are the features and specifications of the TP Link ARCHER C50 AC1200:

  • Wi-Fi Speed: Up to 1167Mbps
  • Wireless Type: 802.11b,g,n,ac
  • Wireless Range: Good
  • CPU Processor: Single-Core
  • RAM Type: DDR3 SDRAM
  • Ethernet Ports: Yes, 4
  • USB Ports: One USB 2.0 Port
  • Antennas: 2x External
  • Guest Network, Parental Controls, and IPv6 Support: Yes
  • 4K HD Video Streaming Support: Yes
  • Support for a Mobile Interface: Yes, iOS, Android

As you can probably tell from the spec-sheet above, the Archer C50 while lacking some features, is still capable enough to support a small-medium sized house effortlessly. Available features such as support for 4K video streaming and IPV6 are to be expected as routers within this price range usually come with it. Online gaming too will be a treat as 1167Mbps is more than enough to run any online game without experiencing even the least bit of lag.

Parental controls are not missing here either. You can set up the router to restrict access to certain websites which may contain adult or malicious content. A firewall to is present to help augment the parental controls feature.

The addition of just 2 external antennas may be a bit of a letdown seeing as many cheaper alternatives these days come with at least 3 antennas. The range of this Wi-Fi router will be good for only a small or medium sized house. Any larger and you’ll need Wi-Fi repeaters.

WPS is included to better secure your connection against malicious attacks and hackers who may want to piggyback on your connection.

As you can see from the above specifications, the ARCHER C50 packs very good value for money and is probably one of the best entry-level Wi-Fi routers currently available in the market.

Pros

  • Very affordable and packs good value for money.
  • Support for parental controls and IPV6 is a huge plus. Most routers in this price range generally don’t offer this functionality.
  • 11ac Wi-Fi technology guarantees one of the fastest Wi-Fi connections possible. Faster than the previous 802.11b,g,n technologies.
  • 4 Ethernet ports are a welcome addition to the total package.
  • Inclusion of a USB 2.0 Port for file or data transfers is also a welcome addition.

Cons

  • Lack of USB 3.0 ports are a major drawback to this otherwise stellar piece of hardware.
  • Just 2 external antennas limit the range and power of this Wi-Fi router.

Conclusion

Overall, while this is not the best Wi-Fi router available on the market, it is definitely one of the most affordable and valuable. For best results, the use of a Wi-Fi repeater is recommended as the double external antennas may not provide the optimal performance. All said and done, the TP Link Archer C50 is a very capable piece of hardware and is certainly worth your consideration when shopping for a reliable Wi-Fi router.
